Researchers identify genetic variant associated with increased risk of AAA

Geisinger researchers are part of an international team that has identified a genetic variant more common in individuals with abdominal aortic aneurysms. This is one of the largest studies ever into the genetics of AAA. The results of the work will appear in this week's online edition of Nature Genetics.

Common SNP in sequence of human genome conferring risk of vascular diseases discovered

Scientists at deCODE genetics and academic colleagues from the Netherlands and twelve other countries across Europe and North America today report the discovery of a common single-letter variation (SNP) in the sequence of the human genome conferring risk of a range of vascular diseases. The SNP confers risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), early-onset heart attack, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and pulmonary embolism, independent of other known risk factors.

FDA accepts ev3's Pipeline Embolization Device PMA for expedited review

ev3 Inc., a global endovascular device company, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally accepted for filing the company's Pre-Market Approval (PMA) application for the Pipeline Embolization Device for treatment of large, giant and wide-necked cerebral aneurysms. The FDA's action means that the PMA application was sufficiently complete and ready for substantive review. The filing date for regulatory purposes is May 18, 2010, the date the FDA received ev3's PMA submission.

New study data on distal aortic perfusion for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair

The vascular surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston have traditionally repaired thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAA) with a clamp and sew (CS) technique that includes neuro-protective adjuncts like epidural cooling and aggressive intercostal reconstruction (IC) to prevent spinal cord ischemia.

Researchers compare clinical outcome of patients with smaller and larger AAAs after EVAR

Patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms of less than 5.5 cm have no significant differences in clinical outcomes after endovascular repair than those with larger AAAs according to data from a five-year prospective clinical trial setting. The researchers maintain their recommendation that small aneurysms should not be treated surgically.

US Court lifts stay on Cook's endovascular technology patent infringement case against Endologix

The United States District Court, Southern District of Indiana, has ruled in favor of Cook Incorporated in its decision to lift the stay on Cook's patent infringement case against Endologix, Inc.. With this ruling, the case, filed by Cook on October 6, 2009, will now proceed. The complaint claims infringement by Endologix of two Cook patents for endovascular technologies, one of Cook's leading technology portfolios.

FDA approves 45mm GORE TAG Thoracic Endoprosthesis device

W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) today announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a 45 mm diameter version of the GORE® TAG® Thoracic Endoprosthesis for treatment of aneurysms of the descending thoracic aorta. The larger diameter device allows treatment of TAAs with proximal and distal neck diameters ranging from 37 - 42 mm and is now available for commercial use in the U.S.
