Astigmatism is a type of refractive inaccuracy in which the shape of the normally curved surface of the cornea is curved to different degrees in different areas. As a result of this abnormality, the light rays that enter the eye fails to converge at a focal point and instead comes to a focus at different focal points with a distance between them.

The new Montefiore Laser and Eye Center recently opened its doors to provide comprehensive care to Westchester patients at the Montefiore Medical Specialists of Westchester in Scarsdale, New York. Seven board-certified ophthalmologists from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center provide patients with specialty emphasis in pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma, cornea and laser refractive surgery.

Highlights of world's largest ophthalmic education conference

Results of clinical research on new presbyopia treatments now available in Europe-and possibly available soon in the United States-were reported in today's Scientific Program of the 2010 Joint Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Middle East-Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO). Cost-effective ways for early detection of 'lazy eye'

Amblyopia, known as "lazy eye," is a major cause of vision problems in children and a common cause of blindness in people aged 20 to 70 in developed countries. In amblyopia the person's stronger eye is favored and his/her weaker eye gradually loses visual power as a result. When the condition is detected and treated before age 7, more than 75 percent of children achieve 20/30 vision or better, the Amblyopia Treatment Study reports.

STAAR Surgical second-quarter total net revenue increases 3.7% to $13.6 million

STAAR Surgical Company, a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of minimally invasive ophthalmic products, today reported results for the second quarter ended July 2, 2010. Revenue for the period grew 3.7% to $13.6 million with the revenue from core products, IOLs and ICLs, increasing by 7%. For the first half of 2010 core product revenues increased by 11% reflecting market share gains by STAAR.

Alcon second-quarter global sales increase 12.5% to $1.89 billion

Alcon, Inc. reported that global sales rose 12.5 percent to $1.89 billion for the second quarter of 2010, or 11.3 percent excluding the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations and acquisitions. Revenue from acquisitions added 40 basis points to sales growth in the quarter, while foreign currency fluctuations added 80 basis points of growth.
