Bronchoscopy is a procedure that uses a bronchoscope to examine the inside of the trachea, bronchi (air passages that lead to the lungs), and lungs. A bronchoscope is a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing. It may also have a tool to remove tissue to be checked under a microscope for signs of disease. The bronchoscope is inserted through the nose or mouth. Bronchoscopy may be used to detect cancer or to perform some treatment procedures.

Researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, found that 3D-printed tracheobronchial tree models compared favorably against other more standard models in training pulmonary physicians to perform bronchoscopy.

American College of Chest Physicians releases new clinical guidelines on EBUS-guided TBNA

The American College of Chest Physicians announced the release of new clinical guidelines on endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA). The guideline, which applies to a common bronchoscopic test, contains 12 recommendations including best practices related to patient factors and procedural aspects.

Veracyte launches new genomic test to improve lung cancer diagnosis

Veracyte, Inc., a molecular diagnostic company pioneering the field of molecular cytology, today announced the launch of its Percepta Bronchial Genomic Classifier, a new genomic test to resolve ambiguity in lung cancer diagnosis. The company will soon begin testing patient samples in its CLIA-certified laboratory, with the Percepta test now available to a limited number of institutions around the country.

For the firefighters and rescue workers conducting the rescue and cleanup operations at Ground Zero from September 2001 to May 2002, exposure to hazardous airborne particles led to a disturbing "WTC cough" -- obstructed airways and inflammatory bronchial hyperactivity -- and acute inflammation of the lungs. At the time, bronchoscopy, the insertion of a fiber optic bronchoscope into the lung, was the only way to obtain lung samples. But this method is highly invasive and impractical for screening large populations.
