Cardo and Arthrex enter Asset Purchase Agreement

Cardo Medical, Inc., an orthopedic medical device company based in Los Angeles, California, its wholly-owned subsidiary, Cardo Medical, LLC, and Arthrex, Inc., a leading provider of sports medicine product development and educational services for orthopedic surgeons based in Naples, Florida, announced today that they signed an asset purchase agreement.

US market for orthopedic extremity devices to grow at 10% CAGR to $4.6 billion by 2015

According to Millennium Research Group, the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, the prosperity of the US market for orthopedic extremity devices will be bolstered by continued product innovation and surgeon specialization. Despite sluggish economic performance in the US market and impending regulatory changes imposed by health care reform, the US orthopedic extremity device market will generate over $4.6 billion in revenues by 2015, growing at a compound annual growth rate in excess of 10%.

Orthofix settles Trinity Evolution patent infringement suit with NuVasive and Osiris

Orthofix International N.V. today announced an internal reorganization designed to streamline operations within its three Global Business Units: Spine, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. The Company expects to record a charge related to employee termination benefits of approximately $4.0 million ($2.4 million net of tax, or $0.13 per diluted share) in the fourth quarter of 2010 in connection with the reorganization.

Weightlifting may help prevent lymphedema following breast cancer treatment

Weightlifting may play a key role in the prevention of the painful limb-swelling condition lymphedema following breast cancer treatment, according to new research from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Combined with the team's previous findings that the exercise limits a worsening of symptoms among women who already have lymphedema, the new data cements the reversal of long-running advice that breast cancer survivors should avoid lifting anything heavier than five pounds after they finish treatment.

National study examines management of sport-related concussions in high school athletes

Each academic year, an estimated 136,000 sports-related concussions occur among high school athletes in the United States. A new study conducted by researchers at the Sports Concussion Clinic at Children's Hospital Boston and the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital examined concussions in high school athletes during the 2008-2009 school year.

The first American study that positions Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) as a viable means in managing knee osteoarthritis, appeared today in the December issue of the American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AJPMR). The study, authored by Dr. Steven Sampson of the Orthohealing Center in Los Angeles, details the account of 14 patients with primary and secondary knee osteoarthritis receiving three platelet-rich plasma injections in the affected knee at 4-week intervals with one year follow up.
