Scientists receive HHS grant to investigate DSC127 in treatment of skin injuries linked with radiation exposure

Derma Sciences, Inc., a medical device and pharmaceutical company focused on advanced wound care, today announced that researchers who invented DSC127 have been awarded a $4.5 million, 16-month grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to investigate preclinically the use of DSC127 in the treatment of skin injuries associated with acute radiation exposure.

Human umbilical cord blood-derived EPCs accelerate wound healing in diabetics

Transplanting human umbilical cord blood-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) has been found to "significantly accelerate" wound closure in diabetic mouse models, said a team of Korean researchers publishing in the current issue of Cell Transplantation.

FDA grants CSL Behring marketing approval for Corifact in treatment of congenital FXIII deficiency

CSL Behring announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted marketing approval for Corifact™, Factor XIII Concentrate (Human), for the routine prophylactic treatment of congenital factor XIII (FXIII) deficiency. Corifact, already available for use in 12 countries throughout the world under the trade name Fibrogammin®- P, is the first and only FXIII concentrate approved in the U.S.

The Association for the Advancement of Wound Care has developed three educational brochures for the care of skin and treatment of wounds. Widely used by clinicians as a resource for patients and their caregivers, AAWC recently converted the brochures into Spanish due to popular demand.

Sanofi-aventis, Sunnybrook enter agreement to develop and commercialize vasculotide

Sanofi-aventis and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced that they have entered into a research agreement and licensing option for vasculotide, an investigational compound to treat chronic wounds. This includes neuropathic diabetic foot ulcers caused by a lack of sensation and neuropathic ulcers that are complicated by peripheral arterial disease, commonly called neuroischemic diabetic foot ulcers.

Genentech's OCEANS Phase III study of Avastin in platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer meets primary endpoint

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, announced today that OCEANS, a Phase III study evaluating Avastin® (bevacizumab) in combination with chemotherapy (carboplatin and gemcitabine) followed by continued use of Avastin alone until disease progression in women with previously treated (recurrent), platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer, met its primary endpoint.
