Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/a30eff/role_of_emerging_m) has announced the addition of the "Role of Emerging Markets in Pharma R&D: An Analysis" report to their offering.

“Role of Emerging Markets in Pharma R&D: An Analysis”

At present the United States attracts approximately 53% of the amount the entire pharmaceutical industry spends on R&D. Industry experts forecast that 20% of this expenditure is likely to move to the Asia Pacific region by end of 2010. Over the past decade, leading Western pharmaceutical companies have set up low-cost research establishments in emerging markets. They have explored the local skilled talent pools in search of innovation and have established CSR programs to help deal with neglected diseases.

As part of its efforts to improve productivity, the pharmaceutical industry is now becoming more globalized in its R&D approach. Companies are now realizing that there is tremendous opportunity in emerging markets not only because they entail low operating costs but also because boosted by fast growing middle class, they are emerging as a huge market for global products.

The industry has been involved in more than 1,900 research and drug development deals worldwide (excluding the North America and Central Europe) in the period 2004-2008. Out of these close to 300 deals were formed with Chinese pharma/biotech, technologists and distributors.
