Politico Pro: Little Room Left For Anti-Abortion Dems
At the Democratic National Convention last week, support for reproductive health -; including the right to an abortion -; was in the prime-time spotlight. But the convention's aggressive appeal to women left one group out in the cold: Democrats who oppose abortion. "It's the first time that I've seen virtually every single speech include a mention of a woman's rights to make her own decision regarding her health," Jennifer Lawless, associate professor and director of the Women and Politics Institute at American University, said of the convention. "This was the first time that Democrats weren't playing defense on this issue" (Smith, 9/10).
