SAMHSA honors contributors to mental health recovery at the 2009 Voice Awards

Writers and producers from The Soloist, "Grey's Anatomy," "United States of Tara," "90210," and others were honored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for increasing awareness of mental health issues and the power of recovery at the 2009 Voice Awards last night. The event was hosted by Academy Award-winning actor and mental health consumer Richard Dreyfuss at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles.

New evidence indicates humans naturally regulate their salt intake

As the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans are currently under development and regulations surrounding sodium consumption are being considered, an analysis of evidence released online today in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN) questions the scientific logic and feasibility of the decades-long effort to limit salt intake in humans.

Preclinical data of CardiAQ Valve Technologies' TMVI in vivo study presented at the TCT 2009

Transcatheter heart valve company CardiAQ Valve Technologies (CVT), which is developing the world’s first self-conforming and self-anchoring technology for Transcatheter Mitral Valve Implantation (TMVI), announced today that successful results of an acute in vivo study of its TMVI system were disclosed by Dr. Joseph Bavaria during the “Mitral Valve Therapies Prior to and in Human Investigation” program at the “Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2009” annual scientific meeting on Friday.

Research to improve the targeting of chemotherapeutic drugs to specific cells

Kenneth Longmuir, associate professor of physiology & biophysics, and Richard Robertson, professor of anatomy & neurobiology, used liposomes, small spheres (less-than 100 nanometer in diameter) of naturally-occurring lipid molecules, as "packages" for the cancer chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin, and a small peptide molecule to "address" the package to the targeted tissue.

Breakthrough in the successful treatment of AMI

Medical device pioneer Stentys announced today the results on 20 patients participating in the Company’s ‘APPOSITION I’ clinical study—the world’s first to treat patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) via a self-expanding stent.
