CFAS supports the provision of publicly funded IVF and ICSI treatment across Canada

The Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society supports fully the provision of publicly funded in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment across Canada. Infertility has been defined by the World Health Organization as a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today announced that the Company has received verbal confirmation from the Division of Metabolic and Endocrine Drug Products of the Food and Drug Agency that the Company may initiate its Investigational New Drug Application for the study of oral Androxal® in the treatment of hypogonadal men with Type II Diabetes (T2D) with a Phase IIa trial.

Fifth SEEM anniversary meeting to be held in Belgrade

On 9 and 10 October the anniversary South Eastern European Meeting (SEEM) will be held in the Yugoslav Drama Theatre (Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozoriste) in Belgrade (RS). Professor Michael Marberger (Vienna, AT), chairman of the Regional Office of the European Association of Urology: "For the 5th time the SEEM will provide a platform where new experimental and clinical work from the region is presented to an international audience".

Androgen deficiency linked to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) in collaboration with researchers from Lahey Clinic Northshore, Peabody, Mass., believe that androgen deficiency might be the underlying cause for a variety of common clinical conditions, including diabetes, erectile dysfunction, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). These findings appear in the September/October issue of the Journal of Andrology.

Chemicals found in breast milk adversly affect the fetal testis

A comparison of breast milk samples from Denmark and Finland revealed a significant difference in environmental chemicals which have previously been implicated in testicular cancer or in adversely affecting development of the fetal testis in humans and animals. This finding is published today in the International Journal of Andrology.

Good news for young male cancer patients

Men who smoke cigarettes may experience a significant decline in their capacity to father a child

Sperm from nearly two-thirds of the chronic smokers in the study failed a special test that measures the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg. On average, those men showed a 75 percent decline in fertilizing capacity when compared to nonsmokers. Lead researcher Loni Burkman, Ph.D., presented the results today (Oct. 17, 2005) at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine annual meeting in Montreal, Quebec.
