Health care industry does not have routine ways to prevent patient harm, expert argues

In health care reform discussions, talk inevitably turns to making hospitals and physicians accountable for patient outcomes. But in a commentary being published in the July 14 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Johns Hopkins patient safety expert Peter Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D., argues that the health care industry doesn't yet have measurable, achievable and routine ways to prevent patient harm — and that, in many cases, there are too many barriers in the way to attain them.

A survey of physicians finds that while most support the professional commitment to report other physicians who they feel are incompetent or impaired, such as from alcohol or drug use, when faced with this situation, many did not follow through on making a report, according to a study in the July 14 issue of JAMA.

Emergency Medical Services Corporation (NYSE: EMS) (EMSC or The Company) today announced that its EmCare segment has completed its acquisition of Affilion®, an emergency physician staffing and management company based in Tempe, Arizona. Founded in 2005, Affilion provides emergency department physician staffing and related management services in hospitals in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The transaction was completed on June 30, 2010, and Affilion, Inc. has become a wholly owned subsidiary of EmCare Inc.

Study demonstrates effectiveness of pre-emptive pain management protocol using pregabalin in urologic surgery

Reporting in the journal Urology, researchers at Thomas Jefferson University have found that a pre-emptive multimodal pain regimen that included pregabalin (Lyrica) decreased the use of opioid analgesics in patients undergoing robotic-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

Waismann Method survey: 88% of individuals taken prescription painkillers for chronic pain relief

According to a recent survey conducted by the Waismann Method of opiate detoxification, doctors prescribing medication for the treatment of chronic pain were found to be the leading source of prescription painkiller use. Approximately 88 percent of all respondents stated they began taking prescription painkillers for chronic pain relief, with an astounding 70 percent of these individuals believing that they experience the same or a greater amount of pain than when originally prescribed painkillers.
