SuperGen encouraged by Eisai's intent to file Dacogen sNDA for new indication

SuperGen, Inc., a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of novel cancer therapies, announced that Eisai Inc. today released information regarding a randomized Phase III clinical trial of Dacogen® (decitabine) for Injection in elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The comparator in this trial was low-dose cytarabine, a chemotherapy agent, or supportive care.

Threshold Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced that it has initiated a Phase 1 clinical trial of TH-302 in patients with advanced leukemias. TH-302 is a proprietary Hypoxia-Activated Prodrug (HAP) that specifically targets tumor hypoxia.

LEAPS vaccine technology generates dendritic cells to stimulate immune system to fight viral illnesses

CEL-SCI Corporation and researchers at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) jointly announced today that a LEAPS-based vaccine (Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System) study has demonstrated the technology's potential using dendritic cells to stimulate the immune system to fight viral illnesses and other diseases.

FDA grants Tarix's TXA127 Orphan Drug designation for stem cell engraftment and treatment of MDS

Tarix Pharmaceuticals today announced that it's drug, TXA127, has been granted Orphan Drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment to enhance engraftment in patients receiving a stem cell transplant. TXA127 has also received Orphan Drug designation for the treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).

VPRIV receives positive opinion from CHMP for treatment of type 1 Gaucher disease

Athersys, CSCRM and CWRU receive $1M to advance MultiStem therapy for SCI

Athersys, Inc. and its collaborators, including the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and Case Western Reserve University, announced today that they have been awarded $1 million through the Ohio Third Frontier Biomedical Program to support research into the treatment of spinal cord injury with MultiStem, Athersys' proprietary stem cell product candidate.

Japan's MHLW grants full marketing authorization to REVLIMID

Celgene International Sàrl announced that REVLIMID (lenalidomide) has been granted full marketing authorization by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for use in combination with dexamethasone as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who have received at least one prior standard therapy. This marketing authorization represents the first regulatory approval of REVLIMID in Japan.

Merck proposes to initiate Phase II proof-of-concept clinical study of posaconazole for chronic Chagas disease

Merck today announced plans to initiate a Phase II investigational proof-of-concept clinical study to evaluate its oral antifungal agent posaconazole for the treatment of chronic Chagas disease. Chagas disease results from infection with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that is spread by biting insects. The disease is estimated to affect approximately eight million people in Latin America, of whom approximately 30-40 percent will develop serious cardiac disease, digestive disease, or both as a result of this infection.

Merck's DULERA Inhalation Aerosol for asthma receives FDA approval

Merck today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved DULERA® (mometasone furoate and formoterol fumarate dihydrate) Inhalation Aerosol, a new fixed-dose combination asthma treatment for patients 12 years of age and older. DULERA is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm. DULERA combines an inhaled corticosteroid (mometasone furoate) with a long-acting beta2-agonist (formoterol fumarate).

UNC team provides first example of successful radiomitigation in mammals

While radiation has therapeutic uses, too much radiation is damaging to cells. The most important acute side effect of radiation poisoning is damage to the bone marrow. The bone marrow produces all the normal blood cells, and therefore a high dose of radiation can lead to low blood counts of red cells, platelets and white blood cells.

FDA grants t2cure orphan drug designation for t2c001 in Buerger's Disease

t2cure GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company developing and marketing stem cell-based regenerative therapies, announced today that the FDA has granted orphan drug designation to t2c001 for the treatment of Buerger's Disease. The Company also announced that in a concurrent application in Europe the EMA's Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products recently recommended t2c001 for orphan designation to the European Commission.

Karolinska Institutet has received a grant of SEK 100 million from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation for a regenerative medicine research centre - the Wallenberg Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WIRM). This funding will give Karolinska Institutet a unique opportunity to concentrate on new and pioneering research, with a special focus on the blood system.

Pfizer announces voluntary withdrawal of Mylotarg from U.S. market following FDA request

Pfizer Inc. today announced the voluntary withdrawal from the U.S. market of the drug Mylotarg (gemtuzumab ozogamicin) for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a bone marrow cancer. The company took the action at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after results from a recent clinical trial raised new concerns about the product's safety and the drug failed to demonstrate clinical benefit to patients enrolled in trials.

ASH selects 14 participants for 2010 MMSAP

The American Society of Hematology announces the selection of 14 participants for its 2010 Minority Medical Student Award Program, which encourages minority Medical students to purse an interest in hematology research. Award recipients will each receive the support of a research mentor and a career-development mentor, travel stipends to attend the ASH annual meeting, and a subscription to the scientific journal Blood, the official journal of ASH.

Stem cell scientists from around the world gathered at the International Society of Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) in San Francisco to exchange information about the latest treatments with stem cells. An American company, TCA Cellular Therapy, LLC announced its FDA clinical trial results using adult stem cells in patients with history of a heart attack during open heart surgery.
