Rural women seek breast cancer screenings for the good of their families

A new study published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs finds that women from rural populations are motivated to seek breast cancer prevention screenings primarily out of concern for the long-term well being of their families. The study shows that by appealing to their strength as caretakers doctors can encourage their rural patients to perform breast health self-examinations, get mammograms, and to talk with doctors about their breast health.

New national public awareness campaign for colon cancer prevention and screening

Almost 40 percent of Americans at risk for colon cancer are not getting screened. StopColonCancerNow.com, a national public awareness campaign for colon cancer prevention and screening, is working to improve that statistic by urging anyone 50 and older to get screened during National Colon Cancer Awareness Month in March.

Prevention and early screening can prevent colorectal cancer in the U.S.: New report

A new report from the American Cancer Society says a large proportion of the 141,000 cases and 49,000 deaths from colorectal cancer expected in the United States this year could be prevented by increasing the use of established screening tests and by applying existing knowledge about colorectal cancer prevention.

Bisphosphonates appear to reduce risk of postmenopausal colorectal cancer by 50%

An international team of researchers has found that the use of bisphosphonates - drugs already taken by millions of healthy women to prevent bone-loss - for more than one year was associated with a 50 percent reduction in the risk of postmenopausal colorectal cancer. The results were published this week in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
