Discovery of AVM can relieve pain due to chronic back pain and neurologic deficits

The discovery of a multi-level arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the thoracic epidural space can now bring relief to potentially thousands of suffers of chronic thoracic pain and progressive myelopothy. Identified as thoracic epidural arteriovenous malformation (T.E.A.M.), this particular AMV primarily affects younger women ages 20 to 40.

Alkermes commences ALKS 37 phase 1 clinical trial for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation

Alkermes, Inc. today announced the initiation of a phase 1 clinical study of ALKS 37, an orally active, peripherally-restricted opioid antagonist with potential to block the opioid agonist effects on gastrointestinal motility, commonly referred to as opioid-induced constipation (OIC). The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic effects of a single oral administration of five doses of ALKS 37 in approximately 40 healthy volunteers.

Neuros Medical announces $1.8 million series A round of investment

Neuros Medical, Inc., a medical device company developing innovative neurostimulation technology for the treatment of chronic pain, announced today a $1.8 million series A round of investment, led by the North Coast Angel Fund (NCAF), which was joined in the investment by Glengary LLC, Ohio Tech Angel Fund, Queen City Angels First Fund III, and individual investors. This round follows the initial investment made earlier in the year from JumpStart Ventures and Case Technology Ventures.

Women Veterans had a lower prevalence of pain than male counterparts returning from the conflicts: Study

In the first study to look at sex-specific pain prevalence in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Veterans, researchers from the VA Connecticut Healthcare System and the Yale University School of Medicine found women Veterans had a lower prevalence of pain than male counterparts returning from the conflicts. Approximately 60% of OEF/OIF Veterans were assessed with pain during the study period.

Doctors and scientists form national pain research centre

An expert network of doctors and research scientists is forming the world's first national centre for research into understanding pain in arthritis. Backed by medical research charity the Arthritis Research Campaign and The University of Nottingham, it will aim to improve treatments for arthritis - the most common cause of chronic pain - which affects more than ten million people in the UK.
