Athletes who undergo tissue transplant surgery for knee damage can return to sports: Study

Athletes with bone and cartilage knee damage who are treated with transplanted tissue can return to sports after surgery, according to a Hospital for Special Surgery study reported at the annual meeting of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, held July 15-18 in Providence, Rhode Island. The study (abstract 8970) overturns the widely held belief that patients who undergo this surgery do not return to athletics.

Brain cancer survivor completes journey across America to raise awareness, money for brain cancer research

Anne Feeley, a 56-year-old mother and brain cancer survivor, completed her journey across America today, cycling 3,708 miles, to raise awareness and money for brain cancer research and patient care. Feeley pedaled the last 6.5 miles of her journey from Hains Point, VA to cross the finish line at the Capital Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC.

Bicycling and brisk walking associated with less weight gain in obese, premenopausal women

Bicycling and brisk walking are associated with less weight gain among pre-menopausal women, especially those who are overweight and obese, according to a report in the June 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Additionally, the report finds that slower walking does not appear to offer the same benefits as brisk walking.

The 7th annual Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride, featuring more than 700 kids of all ages, will once again provide one of the key highlights at the 24th annual Burlingame Criterium, set for Sunday, June 27, 2010. The race activities will fill the streets, restaurants and shops of downtown Burlingame with thousands of competitive cyclists, children, volunteers and spectators. AIDS/LifeCycle event raises $10M to support HIV/AIDS services

More than 2,400 participants in AIDS/LifeCycle arrived at the Veterans Center in Los Angeles today after traveling 545 miles from San Francisco over the past seven days in the world's largest annual HIV/AIDS fundraising event. In its ninth year, the event raised $10 million to support the services of San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center that prevent new HIV infections and care for those living with HIV/AIDS.
