Use of silver dressing in burn cases questioned

The use of expensive silver dressing in burn cases is being brought under the scanner by an editorial in the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin. The NHS has increased its spending from £23 million in 2005 to around £25 million in 2006/7 on such products. The author asks if expensive silver dressing is really justified when cheaper alternatives are available.

New wound care teleassistance service launched

A new service is being launched today: wound care teleassistance, also known as téléassistance en soins de plaies (TASP). With this service a nurse can use a camera to film her patient's wound, while at the same time an expert nurse in another institution can receive the images. They can then hold an online discussion to evaluate the patient's wound and plan treatment.

J&JPRD receives FDA Complete Response Letter for ceftobiprole

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. (J&JPRD) today announced it received a Complete Response letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ceftobiprole. Mesenchymal stem cells may be the key to healing diabetic foot ulcers

Diabetic foot ulcers are the primary cause of hospital admissions for diabetics. Foot ulcers that heal improperly are at risk for infection, which can lead to amputation. According to the American Diabetes Association, one in four patients with diabetic foot ulcers will eventually require lower-limb amputation. Now science has found a way of mobilizing stem cells within the body to treat this health issue, which affects more than three million Americans annually.
