Manuel Don, Ph.D., is a principal investigator in the Division of Communication and Auditory Neuroscience at the House Ear Institute. Dr. Don joined the House Ear Institute in 1976 after working as an assistant research auditory physiologist at the University of California, Irvine.

Surgeons deliver virtual temporal bone dissection course for otolaryngology residents, physicians

Two surgeons from Central Ohio recently traveled to Nicaragua on a humanitarian mission to treat children with serious ear, nose and throat conditions. However, this year they brought along some help in the form of high-tech equipment designed to appeal to a generation that grew up playing video games - not to entertain the children, but to train the local doctors and medical students.

Breast fed babies smarter: Study

Scientists have finally come to a consensus that babies who are breast fed grow up to be more intelligent. A latest study showed that just four weeks on their mothers’ milk can have a ‘significant’ effect on a child’s development in primary and secondary school. These children do better at reading, writing and maths at the ages of five, seven, 11 and 14. It was known till now that breast feeding boosts immunity and helps the children fight ear infections, stomach bugs and even asthma.

Hearing aids with the latest technology through NHS

In the UK we are fortunate enough to have a free provision of hearing aids by way of the NHS. Over the last few years, the NHS has switched from analogue to digital hearing aids for the majority of patients. These hearing instruments are of a reasonable quality and are programmed to match the patients hearing loss. Fantastic! I hear you say, but there's perhaps a little more to this situation than meets the eye.

Several factors may be associated with hearing impairment in middle-aged adults, including cardiovascular disease risks, being male and having a noisy job, according to a report published online first in the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. More than 20 percent of young children with colds or other respiratory viral infections will develop middle ear infections of varying severity—including some mild infections that don't require antibiotics, according to a study in the February issue of The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

New research suggests that adults with hearing loss may face a higher risk of dementia and perhaps Alzheimer’s disease than those who do not suffer hearing loss. The risk of dementia rises with greater loss of hearing say researchers. The study appears in the February issue of the journal Archives of Neurology.
