New finding reveals Barrett's esophagus in asymptomatic women undergoing endoscopic screening

In the November issue of GIE: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), a study out of Stanford University found that Barrett's esophagus was detected in six percent of asymptomatic women undergoing endoscopic screening.

Top-line data from Lexicon Pharmaceuticals' LX1031 Phase 2 study for IBS to be presented

Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced today that top-line data from its Phase 2 clinical study with LX1031 in patients with non-constipating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) will be presented at GASTRO 2009 in London this week. Results from the study, which showed a significant improvement in IBS symptoms, will be presented by Dr. Philip M. Boston Scientific's WallFlex Fully Covered Esophageal Stent receives FDA clearance and CE Mark approval

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced that it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CE Mark approval to market its WallFlex® Fully Covered Esophageal Stent for the treatment of malignant esophageal strictures (obstructions) caused by tumors in patients with resectable or non-resectable esophageal cancer.

PillCam capsule endoscopy is useful and safe in children under eight years old: Study

Given Imaging Ltd. today announced that a multi-center study published in the November edition of Gut showed PillCam capsule endoscopy of the small bowel to be just as useful and equally as safe in children under eight years old as it is in older children or adults. The prospective multicenter analysis was led by Annette Fritscher-Ravens M.D., Department of Interdisciplinary Endoscopy, University Hospital Kiel, Germany.

World's smallest gastrointestinal videoscope with four-way angulation and NBI

Olympus today introduced the world's smallest gastrointestinal videoscope to offer four-way angulation and Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI) to detect upper gastrointestinal abnormalities. The super-slim scope is 5.5 mm in diameter at the distal end, as well as the insertion tube, and offers exceptional insertion capability to enhance patient comfort. The scope also features NBI, Olympus' proprietary imaging technology that filters white light to consist of specific wavelength bands enabling enhanced observation of microvessels and subtle changes on the mucosa.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques as effective as traditional open surgery in treating rectal cancers

Laparoscopic surgery has been used in the treatment of intestinal disorders for close to 20 years, but its benefits have only recently begun to be extended to people with rectal cancer. In a prospective study of 103 patients who underwent straightforward or "hand-assisted" laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer, a team of colon and rectal surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center has shown that the minimally invasive approach can be as effective as traditional open surgery in treating rectal cancers.
