DF/CHCC specialists recommend genetic counseling for children with Li-Fraumeni syndrome

Genetic specialists at Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center (DF/CHCC) are recommending that children being treated for sarcoma should be offered genetic counseling for Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare condition that greatly raises a person's risk of developing additional cancers.

Stem cell markers can aid in determining origin of pediatric sarcomas

The authors of a report in the current issue of the journal Pediatric and Developmental Pathology sought to use stem cell markers as an aid in determining the cell of origin. The expression of stem cell-associated proteins shows differences that can help identify how the tumors evolve. Eighty-one tumors were analyzed, all diagnosed in patients under 18 years old.

The Max Cure Foundation and the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation have partnered to establish a fund in pediatric cancer research. Arsenic agent for leukemia beneficial in treating medulloblastoma, Ewing's Sarcoma

Researchers at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of Georgetown University Medical Center, have found that an arsenic-based agent already FDA-approved for a type of leukemia may be helpful in another hard-to-treat cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma (ES). The research, based on animal studies, also suggests the drug might be beneficial in treating medulloblastoma, a highly malignant pediatric brain cancer.
