NCMLS organises immunology congress at Nijmegen

How do cells in our immune system recognise dangerous invaders and hazardous cells, such as cancer cells? Answers to this and similar questions are evolving rapidly. A large contributor worldwide to the field of immunology is the NCMLS, Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre. The NCMLS is organising an important scientific congress on this very topic, for which the absolute world top immunology experts are coming to Nijmegen.

Keraderm raises $2.5 million from institutional investor

Keraderm Corp. announced the closing today of a $2.5 million dollar Series A investment by NewVa Capital Partners, LP. Currently starting clinical trials, the company's platform harnesses phototherapy technology to treat nail and skin infections. NewVa Capital Partners is a private equity and venture capital fund managed by Third Security, LLC and provides early stage investments in companies located or considering location in the NewVa region of southwest Virginia. This is Keraderm's first institutional investment round.

Phase 2 clinical study results of TOPICA's luliconazole for athlete's foot announced

TOPICA Pharmaceuticals, a privately-held biotechnology company, today announced positive results from its Phase 2 clinical study evaluating luliconazole, one of the most potent and broad spectrum topical antifungal agents, in patients with tinea pedis (athlete's foot). The study was designed to assess the effectiveness of 1% luliconazole cream applied once daily for 14 days compared with once daily for 28 days.

Tamoxifen kills fungus cells and may prevent them from causing disease

An FDA-approved drug used for preventing recurrence of breast cancer shows promise in fighting life-threatening fungal infections common in immune-compromised patients, such as infants born prematurely and patients with cancer. Some scientists suspected that tamoxifen has antifungal properties; now new research from the University of Rochester Medical Center shows that it actually kills fungus cells and stops them from causing disease.
