GC-MS involves coupling a mass spectrometer to a gas chromatography column. Based on the properties of the sample, different compounds of the sample elute at different times based on the retention time. The mass spectrometer then captures and ionizes different particles, and further detects them based on their mass-to-charge ratio.

Agilent Technologies launches industry’s first transportable GC/MS system delivering laboratory-quality analysis

Agilent Technologies Inc. today introduced the 5975T Low Thermal Mass (LTM) Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry Detector (GC/MSD), the industry’s first commercial transportable GC/MS system that delivers laboratory-quality analysis. Using proprietary LTM technology, Agilent has developed the 5975T LTM GC/MS to be smaller, more rugged and to consume less power than in-lab GC/MS instruments, yet capable of the same high-quality performance in the field.

First-quarter fiscal 2010 results announced by Agilent Technologies

Agilent Technologies Inc. today reported revenues of $1.21 billion for the first fiscal quarter ended Jan. 31, 2010, 4 percent above one year ago. First quarter GAAP net income was $79 million, or $0.22 per diluted share. Last year’s first quarter GAAP net income was $64 million, or $0.18 per share.

Carbon nanotubes detect lung cancer markers in the breath

Using an array of nanotube devices, each coated with a different organic material, researchers at the Israel Institute of Technology have developed diagnostic system that may be able to diagnose lung cancer simply by sampling a patient's breath. The results of this study, which was led by Hossam Haick, Ph.D., appear in the journal Nano Letters.

Skin odors used to detect basal cell carcinoma

According to new research from the Monell Center, odors from skin can be used to identify basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. The findings, presented at the 236th meeting of the American Chemical Society, may open doors to development of new methods to detect basal cell carcinoma and other forms of skin cancer.
