Mayo Clinic co-led research finds first gene linked to lung cancer in "never smokers"

A five-center collaborative study that scanned the genomes of thousands of "never smokers" diagnosed with lung cancer as well as healthy never smokers has found a gene they say could be responsible for a significant number of those cancers.

PAREXEL genotypes over 10,000 potential study participants to identify 400 CYP2D6 poor metabolizers

PAREXEL International Corporation, a leading global biopharmaceutical services provider, today announced that it has completed a large and complex pharmacogenetics-based early phase study. The study was conducted in a healthy volunteer population of poor metabolizers of Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6), an important enzyme involved in the metabolism of drugs. The study monitored the QTc interval following administration of a neurological treatment, which has been shown to have a higher drug exposure in poor metabolizers of CYP2D6.

Illumina, Inc. today unveiled its new HumanOmniExpress+ Custom BeadChip (OmniExpress+), an enhancement to the recently announced OmniExpress BeadChip that allows for the addition of up to 200,000 custom variants for a total of >900k variants per sample. OmniExpress+ leverages the proven iSelect custom genotyping infrastructure to provide researchers with unlimited flexibility in adding custom content for disease or pathway-specific markers, rare variants from the 1,000 Genomes Project, or panels for fine-mapping onto the industry’s most optimal set of SNPs.

Rapid, multiplexed genotyping method to identify SNPs that affect warfarin dose developed

Researchers from the Ohio State University have developed a rapid, multiplexed genotyping method to identify the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that affect warfarin dose. The related report by Yang et al, "Rapid Genotyping of SNPs Influencing Warfarin Drug Response by SELDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry," appears in the March 2010 issue of the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.

HPV DNA testing vital in identification of cervical cancer

Roche Molecular Systems, Inc. announced today that preliminary data from its ATHENA (Addressing THE Need for Advanced HPV Diagnostics) trial support the importance of screening for human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes that put women at highest risk for developing cervical cancer. ATHENA is a prospective, double-blind, multi-centered, 47,000-patient, U.S.-registration trial designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of HPV detection as part of a cervical cancer screening program.

Life Technologies reports fourth-quarter and fiscal year results ended December 31, 2009

Life Technologies Corporation today announced results for its fourth quarter and full year ending December 31, 2009. Non-GAAP revenue for the fourth quarter was $874 million, resulting in full year non-GAAP revenues of $3.30 billion, an increase of 5 percent over the $3.14 billion reported for 2008, as if Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems had been combined.
