A sweetener created from the plant used to make tequila could lower blood glucose levels for the 26 million Americans and others worldwide who have type 2 diabetes and help them and the obese lose weight, researchers said here today.

Scientists from the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen and the Technische Universitaet Muenchen, together with scientists in the USA, have developed a new therapeutic approach for treatment of Type 2 diabetes. A novel single molecule hormone, which acts equally on the receptors of the insulin-stimulating hormones GLP-1 and GIP, was observed to reduce weight and improve blood sugar.

Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company today announced they will feature five oral and 12 poster presentations for linagliptin and the investigational compound empagliflozin* at the 49th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) which will take place in Barcelona, from 23 – 27 September. Sanofi presents positive phase 3 data for GLP-1 receptor for type 2 diabetes

Sanofi US (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) announced today data that showed lixisenatide, an investigational once-daily prandial glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, decreased HbA1c by reducing PPG (postprandial glucose) daytime exposure when added to standard of care which includes basal insulin with or without oral anti-diabetic agents (OADs). Lixisenatide is for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
