Largest hepatitis-C U.S. study defines optimal therapy

Final results of the WIN-R trial,[1] the largest hepatitis C study conducted in U.S. patients, showed that weight-based REBETOL (ribavirin, USP) in combination therapy with PEG-INTRON (peginterferon alfa-2b) achieved significantly higher rates of sustained virologic response (SVR)[2] and lower rates of relapse compared to the combination therapy using a flat dose of ribavirin.

Breastfeeding does not raise the risk of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis C virus

One study found that infant girls are twice as likely to be infected as infant boys. Both studies provide new information with which to counsel pregnant women infected with HCV. Taken together, the two new studies expand upon preliminary data from smaller studies of mother-to-child transmission of HCV.

Third Wave Technologies files patent suits against Chiron and Bayer

The company last Friday filed suit against Digene Corp., seeking a court ruling supporting Third Wave's right to sell its human papilloma virus (HPV) products. Third Wave today also filed suit against Chiron Corp., Bayer Corp., and Bayer HealthCare LLC asking for a similar ruling about its right to sell its hepatitis C virus products.

20 percent of people with chronic hepatitis C who receive a liver transplant will develop advanced cirrhosis

A new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine may have found a way to identify those at greatest risk, thereby allowing doctors to decide who should receive treatment that could save the transplanted organ.
