The American Hospital Association endorses the EXTENSION Healthid smart card system

The American Hospital Association, through its subsidiary, AHA Solutions, Inc., has announced its exclusive endorsement of EXTENSION® HealthID™. HealthID™ is a secure smart card that holds individual patient data for use by the hospitals to improve the care experience. Hospitals are able to quickly find and use patient’s information within an individual facility or across their system or network. The benefits of the smart card include providing much improved patient experiences and streamlined administrative costs.

Common Sense Advisory's report highlights effects of health care reform on non-English speaking patients

With an estimated 50 million people who speak languages other than English at home, the United States health care system serves one of the most linguistically diverse patient populations in the world. A new report from market research firm Common Sense Advisory answers the question, "How will health care reform affect patients with limited English proficiency (LEP)?" The firm's new report, "Health Care Reform and Language Services," pinpoints 14 sections of "America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009" that will influence the nation's provision of health care interpreting and translation services.

Results of PCF funded study could impact the standard of care for prostate cancer patients

Twice-yearly intravenous infusion with denosumab, a new targeted therapy to stop bone loss, increased bone density and prevented spinal fractures in men receiving androgen-deprivation therapy for prostate cancer. The report from an international research study, the first to document reduced fracture risk in men receiving the hormone-blocking treatment, was published today in the print edition of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Both fundamental research on rank ligand (RANKL) in prostate cancer bone metastasis and other molecular factors involved in the denosumab study were supported at Massachusetts General Hospital with funding from the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).

Smoke free hospital campuses in USA by end of 2009

A new study from The Joint Commission projects that a majority of U.S. hospitals will have a smoke-free campus by the end of 2009. The study, "The Adoption of Smoke-Free Hospital Campuses in the United States," appears in the latest online issue of Tobacco Control, a British Medical Journal Group publication.

Northern Illinois Proton Treatment and Research Center appoints Cherilyn Murer as Chair of its board of directors

The Northern Illinois Proton Treatment and Research Center (NIPTRC) announced today that Cherilyn Murer has been named Chair of its board of directors. Murer, who previously served as vice-chair of NIPTRC is also a Northern Illinois University Trustee and concluded a two year term as Chair of the NIU Board of Trustees on June 30, 2009.

Wheat-free diet reduces the incidence of diabetes

Scientists at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the University of Ottawa have discovered what may be an important clue to the cause of type 1 diabetes. Dr. Fraser Scott and his team tested 42 people with type 1 diabetes and found that nearly half had an abnormal immune response to wheat proteins. The study is published in the August 2009 issue of the journal Diabetes.

The findings show that ads for beer, spirits and "alcopop" aired much more frequently when more teens were watching.

Alliance with GE Healthcare enables Moffitt Cancer Center optimize patient care capacity

More than half of U.S. hospitals are capacity constrained and unable to add patients without facility expansion or extended hours.
