Alios begins oral dosing of ALS-8176 in Phase 1 clinical trial for RSV infection

Alios BioPharma, Inc. today announced that it has begun oral dosing of ALS-8176 in a Phase 1 clinical trial. ALS-8176 is a structurally novel, anti-respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) nucleoside analog that is being developed for the treatment of acute RSV infection.

Novel multiplex immunoassay approach to capture HIV antibodies

Detection of HIV antibodies is used to diagnose HIV infection and monitor trials of experimental HIV/AIDS vaccines. New, more sensitive detection systems being developed use microspheres to capture HIV antibodies and can measure even small amounts of multiple antibodies at one time.

UCSF researchers create first functioning human thymus tissue from embryonic stem cells

Raising hopes for cell-based therapies, UC San Francisco researchers have created the first functioning human thymus tissue from embryonic stem cells, in the laboratory. The researchers showed that, in mice, the tissue can be used to foster the development of white blood cells the body needs to mount healthy immune responses and to prevent harmful autoimmune reactions.

Long-term use of highly active antiretroviral therapies does not appear to be associated with impaired heart function in children and adolescents in a study that sought to determine the cardiac effects of prolonged exposure to HAART on children infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, according to a report published Online First by JAMA Pediatrics, a JAMA Network publication.
