Gene linked to endometrial cancer identified

Endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive tract, representing 6% of all cancers. There is currently no screening method or biomarker to indicate early presence of disease. "It is a very common malignancy that affects women of all ages" comments paper author Dr. Diego Castrillon. The cancer forms from the cells that grow along the inner lining of the uterus, which is called the endometrium, and usually it is diagnosed following patient reports of abnormal bleeding.

The levels of an inflammatory chemokine were significantly elevated in patients with pancreatic cancer who were extremely obese, according to research conducted by scientists at the Jefferson Pancreatic, Biliary and Related Cancers Center. BRAF drugs may accelerate tumour growth in cancer patients with faulty RAS gene

A team of UK scientists has made the unexpected discovery that drugs which target a well known fault in a protein called BRAF could actually fuel the progression of cancer in some cases. Iodoprovidone exhibits safety and efficiency in management of malignant pleural effusion

In the USA each year, 200,000 cancer patients suffer from a malignant pleural effusion - development of excessive fluid (pleural effusion) in the chest. Several litres of such fluid can accumulate, and many patients suffer from significant breathlessness and distress. One in four patients with lung cancer, one in every three with breast cancer and most of the patients with mesothelioma will develop a malignant effusion.

Canary Foundation researcher awarded $11.5M NIH POCRC SPORE grant for early detection ovarian cancer research

Canary Foundation announces its first researcher, Nicole Urban, Sc.D., and collaborators are awarded 5 years of renewed funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the Pacific Ovarian Cancer Research Consortium (POCRC) Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). The SPORE grant will allow Dr. Urban and fellow researchers to continue work in locating tumor markers and developing blood tests to identify and assess risk and early detection of ovarian cancer. The Listwin Family Foundation and Canary Foundation have been funding Dr. Urban's research since 2002.
