Isis commences ISIS-APOCIIIRx Phase 1 trial in hypertriglyceridemia

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced the initiation of a Phase 1 study of ISIS-APOCIIIRx, an antisense drug designed to lower triglycerides to treat a variety of diseases associated with elevated triglycerides. Essentialis receives patent for active component in DCCR product

Essentialis, Inc. announced today that the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 7,799,777 entitled Salts of potassium ATP channel openers and uses thereof. The patent claims a novel composition of a polymorph of diazoxide choline, the active ingredient in the Essentialis lead product, DCCR. Essentialis has successfully completed phase 2b clinical trials with DCCR, showing a highly significant triglyceride reduction in dyslipidemic patients.

A detailed study conducted by a team from the University of Athens on the Aegean island of Ikaria has demonstrated that moderate consumption of coffee by hypertensive elderly individuals can lead to improvements in aortic distensibility. Distensibility is a measure of the elasticity of arteries, and low levels have long been recognised as an indicator of atherosclerosis and a reliable predictor of future cardiovascular events.

Acura Pharmaceuticals reports net loss of $3.2M for second-quarter 2010

Acura Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported a second quarter 2010 net loss of $3.2 million or $0.07 per share compared to net loss of $6.5 million, or $0.14 per share for the second quarter of 2009. For the six months ended June 30, 2010, the Company reported a net loss of $7.2 million, or $0.15 per share compared to net loss of $7.8 million, or $0.17 per share for the same period in 2009. At July 29, 2010 we had cash and cash equivalents of approximately $26.5 million with no term indebtedness.

ESC concerned over interpretation of JUPITER sub-analysis trial results about HDL cholesterol

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) is concerned that interpretations of a paper about cholesterol, published in the Lancet, could act to deter ongoing research efforts into developing new therapeutic strategies to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Vertellus announces new 3-cyanopyridine production unit at Nantong facility

Vertellus Specialties Inc. announced today that it will break ground on a new 3-cyanopyridine production unit at Vertellus' production facility in Nantong, Jiangsu, China.
