Mayo Clinic to establish pencil beam proton scanning facilities in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida

Mayo Clinic today announced plans to establish the Mayo Clinic Proton Beam Therapy Program as part of Mayo's national three-site cancer center in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida. The new program will employ intensity modulated proton therapy — based on pencil beam scanning — which is a more precise form of proton therapy treatment that allows greater control over radiation doses, shorter treatment times and fewer side effects. It is also believed to be more cost effective in selected patients.

CDH Proton Center commences treatment with IBA's Proteus 235 proton delivery system

IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) and ProCure Treatment Centers, Inc., (ProCure) announced today that the CDH Proton Center, A ProCure Center, located outside Chicago, recently delivered proton radiation treatment to its first patients using IBA's Proteus 235 proton delivery system. It took only 24 months to build the facility, install the equipment and treat the first patient, setting a new world record in bringing this important technology to patients who could benefit.

LinkMed third quarter net sales decrease to SEK 19.1 million

LinkMed decided to change the strategic focus of its operations, putting further focus on the transplantation sector, while intensifying and accelerating efforts to harvest the value of its associated companies. The change in strategy resulted in restructuring costs of SEK 6.3 million, charged to earnings in the third quarter. The restructuring carried out so far will result in an annual decrease in costs of SEK 7 million.

Japanese study finds proton beam therapy safe and effective for Stage I inoperable NSCLC

Proton beam therapy is safe and effective and may be superior to other conventional treatments for Stage I inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, according to a study in the October issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology•Biology•Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Robot-assisted brachytherapy for treating prostate cancer

In the first-of-a-kind clinical trial, a robot will be used to place therapeutic radioactive seeds in prostate cancer patients. The National Cancer Institute-supported study, which will enroll 14 patients, has just opened at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Illinois CDH Proton Center to open ahead of schedule in October

Proton therapy, an alternative to radiation for the treatment of cancer, will be available in Illinois sooner than expected. Originally slated to open in early 2011, the CDH Proton Center, A ProCure Center, will open its doors Oct. 19, making it the first proton therapy center in Illinois and only the ninth in the country.

Proton therapy to treat patient’s tumor without compromising quality of life

The radiation oncologist's mantra is to deliver the maximum dose of radiation to the malignant tumor, while limiting damage to healthy surrounding tissue. Skandion Clinic selects IBA for installation of particle therapy facility
