Originally it was the aspect of medical science dealing with the medical use of electromagnetic energy emitted by X-ray machines or other such radiation devices for the purpose of obtaining visual information as part of medical imaging.

Carotid artery stenting, a less invasive alternative to surgery on the carotid artery (carotid endarterectomy), is equally safe and effective for people at risk for stroke as carotid endarterectomy, according to a major new study presented today at the 2010 International Stroke Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

AMICAS board to evaluate updated acquisition proposal from Merge Healthcare

AMICAS, Inc., a leader in image and information management solutions, today announced that it has received from Merge Healthcare Incorporated a proposal to acquire all of the outstanding shares of AMICAS for $6.05 per share in cash, which has been updated to include an executed definitive commitment letter for $200 million of financing from Morgan Stanley and confirmation that Merge will place a portion of the pre-funded proceeds received from its mezzanine investors into an escrow account directly accessible by AMICAS.

Meditation improves cognition in people with memory loss

The Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation today announced data demonstrating that a specific meditation performed daily for eight weeks increased brain activity in areas central to memory and actually improved cognition in patients suffering from memory problems. The results of the study, conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, were published in an early online version of an article scheduled to appear in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease (Volume 20:2, April 2010).

USPSTF-recommended guidelines lead to decline in mammograms and early detection programs for women under 50

In some states women ages 40 to 49 have less access to mammograms since the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released its recommendations to change breast cancer screening guidelines last November, according to a recent survey conducted by the Avon Foundation for Women. The USPSTF recommended changing the current mammography screening guidelines for average risk women to begin biennial screening at age 50 instead of annual mammograms starting at age 40.

New cardiac imaging technique reduces radiation exposure compared to standard helical scan

In a new study published in the March issue of Radiology, researchers from Columbia University and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute have determined that an imaging exam of the heart using the latest generation of CT technology exposes patients to as much as 91 percent less radiation than standard helical CT scanning.
