The term renal artery stenosis (RAS) applies to a cluster of disease conditions with varying etiologies. The most prominent among them are fibromuscular dysplasia and atherosclerotic RAS (ARAS). Renal artery stenosis is a variant of peripheral arterial disease and ARAS accounts for 90% of all cases.

Renal artery stent revascularization reduces blood pressure in patients with severe hypertension

Patients with uncontrolled renovascular hypertension saw a significant improvement in their blood pressure with renal artery stent deployment. The multicenter HERCULES trial, evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the RX Herculink Elite Stent, found that patients with higher blood pressure levels at baseline had the most dramatic reduction in blood pressure following intervention.

Abbott today announced it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the RX Herculink Elite® Renal Stent System for the treatment of renal artery stenosis (narrowing of the main arteries supplying blood to the kidneys) in patients with uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure).

Positive results from Cook Medical's REFORM stent clinical trial for treatment of renal artery stenosis

Study investigators today reported initial data from Cook Medical's REFORM clinical trial that is aimed at assessing the safety and effectiveness of the company's balloon-expandable renal stent for the treatment of renal artery stenosis. The data, presented by Robert Bersin, M.D., at ISET 2011, reveal a nine-month primary patency rate of 89.5 percent and a 97 percent rate of successful delivery and deployment of the stent.
