Canadian Cancer Society calls for legislation to ban cosmetic pesticides

With a new poll showing more than 70 per cent of British Columbians believe exposure to cosmetic pesticides increases their risk to cancer and threatens the environment, the Canadian Cancer Society wants all leadership candidates to pledge introduction of legislation banning cosmetic pesticides.

New study to understand dimensions of injuries sustained by soldiers serving overseas

A team of U.S. Army orthopedic surgeons is conducting research to better understand the dimensions of injuries sustained by soldiers serving overseas. The most recent paper in their research series, presented this week at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) 2011 Annual Meeting, followed a single Brigade Combat Team of 4,122 soldiers over 15 months in Iraq.

Biologist investigates CAPV-EAE population for hereditary breast and ovary cancer

Between 5 % and 10 % of breast cancer cases are hereditary, arising because the patient inherits from the father or mother a mutation in a gene that is susceptible to causing the illness. BRCA1 and BRCA2 have already been identified as two of the genes to be monitored. It is estimated that 30 % of hereditary breast cancer cases are due to mutations in one of these two genes.

Study reports 9,500 injuries, 100 deaths related to crib products in the U.S.

Parents and caregivers have traditionally relied on cribs, playpens and bassinets to protect children while they sleep. The massive crib recalls followed by the announcement in December 2010 by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban drop-side cribs have caused many families to question the safety of these products.

FRC commends amendment to prevent federal funding for Planned Parenthood

Family Research Council praised the U.S. House of Representatives for today approving U.S. Rep. Mike Pence's (R-IN) amendment to prevent any funds made available under the continuing appropriation bill from being provided to Planned Parenthood. Patients who undergo elective orthopedic surgeries at high-volume, regional hospitals have better surgical outcomes and experience fewer complications than those who undergo those surgeries at local hospitals, according to research being presented by Hospital for Special Surgery investigators at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
