CAMD releases first combined clinical trial data on neuro-degenerative diseases

A new database of more than 4,000 Alzheimer's disease patients who have participated in 11 industry-sponsored clinical trials will be released today by the Coalition Against Major Diseases (CAMD). This is the first database of combined clinical trials to be openly shared by pharmaceutical companies and made available to qualified researchers around the world.

Scientists develop application of rare Earth elements to control phosphorus runoff from livestock manure

Nutrient runoff from livestock manure is a common source of agricultural pollution. Looking for an uncommon solution, a team of scientists has developed an application of rare earth elements to control and track runoff phosphorus from soils receiving livestock manure. In addition to reducing the solubility of phosphorus, this method shows particular promise for researchers interested in tracking the fate of manure nutrients in agricultural settings.

Nurse with enhanced clinical skills detects same breast abnormalities as surgeon

UK researchers have developed an Initiative that could help hospitals prevent delays to the two-week cancer target, following the reduction in junior doctors' working hours due to the European Working Time Directive. A specially trained nurse practitioner and consultant breast surgeon who examined 126 women referred to a symptomatic breast disease clinic picked up the same breast abnormalities in 92% of cases.

Synexus invests in Doppler Ultrasound for 7 UK-based Dedicated Research Centres

Manchester-based Synexus, the world's largest multi-national company dedicated to the recruitment and running of clinical trials, has recently invested in Doppler Ultrasound equipment for each of its seven UK-based Dedicated Research Centres. After training for all Synexus' doctors, the facilities are now being used as part of the drive to recruit patients to a new diabetes study.

Silence Therapeutics plc announces the issuance of United States patent 7,732,593, titled Methods and Compositions For Controlling Efficacy of RNA Silencing, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The issued patent, which is based on the seminal research of Phillip D. Zamore, Ph.D., Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, the Gretchen Stone Cook Chair of Biomedical Sciences, and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology at University of Massachusetts Medical School, generally claims methods of enhancing the RNA silencing activity of RNA interference (RNAi) agents through certain structural modifications.

Study finds survival disparities among patients with colorectal cancer

Disparities in cancer stage and treatment are the main reasons why Medicaid-insured and uninsured rectal cancer patients are twice as likely to die within five years as privately insured patients. That is the conclusion of a new study published early online in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society. Because poorer survival among rectal cancer patients without private insurance is largely attributable to later cancer stage at diagnosis and inadequate treatment, disparities may be lessened through health care reform.

UJI participates in project OPTIMI for early detection of depression

Treatments for mental illnesses are based on medicines and on therapies. Nevertheless it is not being done much to develop effective systems to prevent the appearance of such illnesses. In January starts the European initiative OPTIMI to contribute to the early detection of depression. The research group Labpsitec of the Department of Basic and Clinical Psychology and Psychobiology at the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón, takes part in the project with the design of evaluation strategies for people in situation of risk.
