NPS completes patient randomization in GATTEX Phase 3 study for PN dependent short bowel syndrome

NPS Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company developing innovative therapeutics for rare gastrointestinal and endocrine disorders, today announced the completion of patient randomization in its Phase 3 registration study of GATTEX® (teduglutide). The double-blind, placebo-controlled safety and efficacy study, which is known as STEPS, is being conducted in patients with parenteral nutrition (PN) dependent short bowel syndrome (SBS) and is now fully randomized with 86 patients.

NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the sale of its royalty rights from sales of REGPARA® (cinacalcet HCl) to a fund managed by DRI Capital, Inc., (Fund) for $38.4 million. Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition in which the ability of the small intestine to absorb the nutrition a person needs from food is impaired. Short bowel syndrome can occur after surgical removal of part of the intestine, due to trauma or because the intestine is diseased.

Phase 3 study of drug teduglutide in patients with short bowel syndrome

Teduglutide is an analog of glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), a naturally occurring hormone that regulates the growth, proliferation and maintenance of cells lining the gastrointestinal tract. Teduglutide has been shown in animal studies and previous human clinical trials to increase the size and number of these cells, thereby increasing the absorptive surface area of the intestines.
