Wellstar International provides shareholder update

We have been working very hard to have our Trillennium Medical Imaging System ready to go to market. As most are aware we have been waiting for the Duke Study to be published in the ADVANCES IN SKIN AND WOUND CARE PUBLICATION JOURNAL. While everything has been submitted to the publisher and there have been two rounds of questions and clarifications resubmitted, we are confident and excited that we will have the results published in August or September.

Scientists complete comparative analysis of bacterial communities living in human nose, throat

Scientists have completed the most comprehensive comparative analysis to date of bacterial communities inhabiting the human nose and throat, which could provide new insights into why some individuals become colonized with pathogens while others do not. They release their findings today in mBio- the online open-access journal published by the American Society for Microbiology.

Fructose makes cells mature into fat cells in belly fat, study finds

Fructose, the sugar widely used as high-fructose corn syrup in soft drinks and processed foods, often gets some of the blame for the widespread rise in obesity. Now a laboratory study has found that when fructose is present as children's fat cells mature, it makes more of these cells mature into fat cells in belly fat and less able to respond to insulin in both belly fat and fat located below the skin.

In a preliminary and apparently first-of-its-kind study, Agricultural Research Service research physiologist Charles B. Stephensen and colleagues have developed a preliminary model that predicts an individual's vitamin D requirements.

Gladstone Institute researcher to receive Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology

The non-profit Inamori Foundation (President: Dr. Kazuo Inamori) today announced that Dr. Shinya Yamanaka will receive its 26th annual Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology, which for 2010 focuses on the fields of Biotechnology and Medical Technology. Dr. Yamanaka, 47, will receive the award for his pioneering work in developing a technology to generate pluripotent stem cells that does not require the use of human embryos.

Roche implements risk mitigation plan in taspoglutide Phase III programme

Ipsen, a global biopharmaceutical group, today announced that its partner Roche today announced the implementation of a risk mitigation plan in the taspoglutide Phase III programme. Taspoglutide, the first once weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue based on a human sequence, originating from Ipsen's research is developed by Roche. This compound is similar to the natural hormone GLP-1 which has a key role in blood sugar regulation.

FDA approves Jevtana to treat men with prostate cancer

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Jevtana (cabazitaxel), a chemotherapy drug used in combination with the steroid prednisone to treat men with prostate cancer. Jevtana is the first treatment for advanced, hormone-refractory, prostate cancer that has worsened during or after treatment with docetaxel, a commonly used drug for advanced prostate cancer.
