New generation CPAP mask to aid sleep apnoea patients from ResMed

ResMed, a leading manufacturer of sleep and respiratory medical equipment, today announced that it has introduced a new generation continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask designed to improve the patient experience and compliance. University of Surrey lecturer on Co-sleeping

The event will be a series of overlapping presentations based on video clips of older people talking about their experience of poor sleep, and the impact this has on their lives. The presenters are all involved in the SomnIA (Sleep in Ageing) project based at the University of Surrey. As well as the video-based presentations and discussions, members of the audience will be invited to share some of their own experiences of poor sleep, and write down questions which they would like the panel of presenters to address during the last part of the event.

Sleep apnea increases chances of dying

Nightly bouts of interrupted, oxygen-deprived sleep from a collapsed airway in the upper neck raises the chances of dying in middle-aged to elderly people by as much as 46 percent in the most severe cases, according to a landmark study on sleep apnea by lung experts at Johns Hopkins and six other U.S. medical centers.

Link between sleep disorders, diet, exercise and technology use in adolescents

According to a research abstract that will be presented on Tuesday, June 9, at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, adolescent obesity is associated with having less sleep. Reduction in sleep could be related to a higher caffeine intake, more hours of technology use and increased symptoms of sleep disorders (such as snoring).

Sleep disordered breathing in children in a general population sample: prevalence and risk factors

A study in the June 1 issue of the journal SLEEP found that waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) are consistent, independent risk factors for all severity levels of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) in children, suggesting that as with adult SDB, metabolic factors are important risk factors for childhood SDB.
