NHLBI grants MU $8.47 million for research on cardiovascular diseases

One of the largest medical research grants ever awarded to the University of Missouri was announced today by MU scientists and administrators. The National Institutes of Health grant will help answer important questions about such prevalent health problems as high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. The conditions are closely associated with cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in Missouri and the nation.

RayBiotech announces biomarker grant winners

RayBiotech, Inc. has announced the winners of its Biomarker Discovery Pilot Grant program. In total, 18 award recipients were chosen for grants of up to $20,000 each, redeemable for RayBiotech products and services. "By offering these grants," states Dr. Ray (Ruopan) Huang, Founder and President of RayBiotech, "we intend to demonstrate that any researcher with a modest research budget can successfully discover and validate disease-related biomarkers using our antibody arrays."

Results from VeriStrat biomarker analysis of Phase III trial presented at European Lung Cancer Conference

Results from the VeriStrat biomarker analysis of a multicenter Phase III trial were presented today at the 2nd European Lung Cancer Conference currently being held in Geneva, Switzerland. Results showed that the VeriStrat test identified patients who were likely to have a survival benefit from treatment with erlotinib, a commonly prescribed oral therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

Life Technologies first-quarter non-GAAP 2010 revenue increases 13% to $887 million

Life Technologies Corporation today announced results for its first quarter ending March 31, 2010. Non-GAAP revenue for the first quarter was $887 million, an increase of 13 percent over the $785 million reported for the first quarter of 2009. Excluding the impact of currency and completed acquisitions and divestitures, organic revenue for the quarter grew 10 percent over the same period in the previous year.

Waters first-quarter sales increases 10% to $368 million

Waters Corporation reported first quarter 2010 sales of $368 million, an increase of 10% from sales of $333 million in the first quarter of 2009. In the quarter, foreign currency translation increased sales growth rate by 4% and, on a currency neutral basis, sales increased by 6% in comparison to the prior year's first quarter sales. On a GAAP basis, earnings per diluted share (E.P.S.) for the first quarter of 2010 were $0.79, compared to $0.75 for the first quarter of 2009.

Hepatic fibrosis (HF) occurs in most types of chronic liver diseases and approximately 25%-40% of HF cases may ultimately progress to hepatic cirrhosis. Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) contribute significantly to the occurrence of HF and the activation of HSC is the key issue in the pathogenesis of HF. Metal implants in young mothers may pose danger to offspring

Women with metal-on-metal hip implants, where both the ball of the joint and the surface of the socket are made of metal, pass metal ions to their offspring during pregnancy, according to a study by researchers at Rush University Medical Center. The ions are the result of wear and corrosion as the metal parts rub against one another.
