Novel AI algorithm predicts the risk of mortality for patients suffering a major injury

Scientists from the Department of Traumatology and Acute Critical Medicine at the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine developed an AI algorithm to predict the risk of mortality for patients suffering a major injury. Using the Japan Trauma Data Bank for the years 2013 to 2017, they were able to obtain records for over 70,000 patients who had experienced blunt-force trauma, which allowed the researchers to identify critical factors that could guide treatment strategies more precisely.

Study quantifies the prognostic accuracy of two protein biomarkers

Blood tests taken within 24 hours of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) flag which patients are likely to die and which patients are likely to survive with severe disability, according to a study headed by UC San Francisco, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan. Their results -- available within minutes -- may confirm the need for prompt surgical interventions or may help guide conversations with families in cases of devastating injury.

Study shows how changing stroke care protocols could improve triage and patient's survival

Implementing severity-based field triage leads to faster treatment and less disability for stroke patients. The research presented today at the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery's 19th Annual Meeting, and now published online in the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, shows that states that use field-based stroke severity triage as part of their Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) transport protocols give severe stroke patients more rapid access to specially trained neuroendovascular care teams and lifesaving thrombectomy.
