New disposable, microfluidic PDMS device for identification of advanced breast cancer

A new disposable device based on advances in microfluidics may help identify advanced breast cancer patients who are candidates for therapy with the drug trastuzumab (Herceptin). The device is described in the American Institute of Physics' journal Biomicrofluidics.

Researchers identify interferons may inhibit IL-1b protein production

Among the first is the production of cell factors such as interferons and IL-1beta. Interferons have several functions, including activating a series of intracellular signals such as Tyk2 (Tyrosine kinase 2), while IL-1beta is important for the induction of inflammation, which helps directly to protect the body against attack.

AVEO achieves enrollment target for tivozanib global Phase 3 clinical trial in advanced renal cell carcinoma

AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that it has achieved its enrollment target for TIVO-1, its global Phase 3 clinical trial for its oral, triple VEGF receptor inhibitor, tivozanib, in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma. In February of this year, AVEO initiated enrollment in TIVO-1, and has successfully reached the target enrollment of 500 patients.

ArQule, Daiichi Sankyo announce decision to advance ARQ 197 into Phase 3 clinical trial for NSCLC

ArQule, Inc. and Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. today announced that they will move forward with a Phase 3 clinical trial of ARQ 197, a small molecule inhibitor of the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase, in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In connection with this decision, the sponsor company, Daiichi Sankyo, will file a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a trial comparing ARQ 197 plus erlotinib against erlotinib plus placebo.

ArQule, Inc. today announced the initiation of a Phase 2, single agent trial with ARQ 197 in gastric cancer by Kyowa Hakko Kirin, its exclusive licensee for the development and commercialization of ARQ 197 in the Asian territory consisting of Japan, China (including Hong Kong), South Korea and Taiwan. Gilead Sciences signs definitive agreement to acquire CGI Pharmaceuticals

Gilead Sciences, Inc. and CGI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately-held, development-stage pharmaceutical company focused on small molecule chemistry and kinase biology, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement pursuant to which Gilead will acquire CGI. Study reveals increase of enzyme MAO-A in female brain during immediate postpartum period

Within the first week after giving birth, up to 70 percent of all women experience symptoms of the baby blues. While most women recover quickly, up to 13 percent of all new mothers suffer from symptoms of a clinical-level postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is defined as a major depressive episode starting within 4 weeks after delivery and is a significant public health problem. Postpartum blues represents a major risk factor for developing postpartum depression and severe postpartum blues symptoms can be viewed as a prodromal stage for postpartum depression.
