Vascular Solutions acquires EXPRO Elite and MICRO Elite snare products from Radius

Vascular Solutions, Inc. today announced that it has acquired the assets related to the EXPRO Elite™ and MICRO Elite™ snare products from Radius Medical Technologies, Inc. and its subsidiary, Radius Medical, LLC. Vascular Solutions has been selling the EXPRO Elite™ and MICRO Elite™ snares in the U.S. under a distribution relationship with Radius since 2008, while in international markets Radius has been selling the products through a network of independent distributors.

FDA approves Boehringer Ingelheim's Pradaxa for stroke risk reduction in patients with non-valvular AF

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Pradaxa® (dabigatran etexilate), Boehringer Ingelheim's novel, oral direct thrombin inhibitor for stroke risk reduction in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) marking the first approval of a new oral anticoagulant in the U.S. in more than 50 years.

Hospital mortality rates decline by 7.98% from 2007 to 2009

A new independent study by HealthGrades of patient outcomes at America's hospitals found that patients at 5-star rated hospitals had a 72% lower risk of dying when compared with patients at 1-star-rated hospitals -- an enormous gap that has held steady over the past years even as overall mortality rates have improved.

St. Jude Medical to acquire AGA Medical

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, and AGA Medical Holdings, Inc., today announced that the Boards of Directors of both companies have approved a definitive agreement under which St. Jude Medical will acquire all of the outstanding shares of AGA Medical for $20.80 per share in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $1.3 billion, including the assumption of approximately $225 million in outstanding debt.

Pericytes regulate blood-brain barrier

While the blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain from harmful chemicals occurring naturally in the blood, it also obstructs the transport of drugs to the brain. In an article in Nature scientists at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet now present a potential solution to the problem. The key to the BBB is a cell-type in the blood vessel walls called pericytes, and the researchers hope that their findings will one day contribute to new therapies for diseases like Alzheimer's and stroke.

DFG to establish new Research Units

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) is establishing four new Research Units to facilitate cross-regional, interdisciplinary cooperation among researchers. This decision was taken by the DFG Senate at its autumn meeting in Bonn. Researchers develop new lab test for diagnosing preeclampsia

In as many as 8 percent of pregnancies worldwide, women who seem fine for months develop preeclampsia, a serious complication causing symptoms including high blood pressure, severe swelling, and problems with placental development. The untreatable and unpredictable condition, with no known cause, often requires premature delivery, and can sometimes kill the mother and the fetus.
