Amorcyte receives patent for chemotactic hematopoietic stem cell product

Amorcyte, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing cell therapy products to treat cardiovascular disease, today announced that it has been granted United States Patent number 7,794,705 titled "Compositions and Methods of Vascular Injury Repair." The patent contains both composition of matter and method claims surrounding therapeutic chemotactic hematopoietic stem cell products used in treating or repairing a vascular injury following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and delivery of the cell therapy.

Study shows attaching prostheses to titanium implant improves quality of life

Today sees the presentation of a study that, for the first time, shows the results of treatment using prostheses attached to titanium implants in the bones of patients with above-the-knee amputations. It reveals that the treatment improves function and quality of life in nine out of ten patients, and is the result of research carried out at the Sahlgrenska Academy and Sahlgrenska University Hospital that is being presented this week at the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) annual international conference in Gothenburg.

Avinger initiates enrollment in Wildcat Catheter trial for chronic total occlusions in femoropopliteal lesions

Avinger, Inc., a medical device company focused on the development of innovative devices to combat peripheral artery disease, announces the enrollment of the first patient in the CONNECT (Chronic TOtal OcclusioN CrossiNg with thE WildCat CatheTer) clinical trial. The CONNECT trial is a prospective, multi-center, non-randomized study intended to evaluate the Wildcat Catheter's ability to cross chronic total occlusions in femoropopliteal lesions.

UC Denver researcher awarded NIH grant to study PAH

A disease that has no cure in young children and adults is getting closer attention, thanks to a University of Colorado Denver Bioengineering assistant professor and a five year National Heart Lung and Blood Institute/National Institutes of Health grant. Kendall Hunter, PhD, will perform research to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension in children and adults with approximately $700,000 over a five-year period.

JHN launches network to advance neuroscience care

Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) is launching the Jefferson Neuroscience Network (JNN) to promote collaboration among area hospitals to advance neuroscience care throughout the region. Chestnut Hill Hospital is the first hospital to join JNN. Through this collaboration, Jefferson and Chestnut Hill will provide the most sophisticated care and expertise available to patients with time-sensitive neurovascular diseases.

Positive results from YM BioSciences' CYT997 Phase I study for vascular disruption in tumors

YM BioSciences Inc., today announced the publication of Phase I results demonstrating that CYT997, a novel vascular disrupting agent (VDA), was well tolerated at doses that were associated with pharmacodynamic evidence of vascular disruption in tumors. The article entitled "Phase I trial of CYT997, a novel cytotoxic and vascular-disrupting agent," was published in the premier cancer journal, the British Journal of Cancer.

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), is a rare, fatal genetic disease characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. All children with Progeria die of the same heart disease that affects millions of normal aging adults (atherosclerosis), but instead of occurring at 60 or 70 years of age, these children may suffer heart attacks and strokes even before age 10, and the average age of death is 13 years.

FDA grants Teleflex 510(k) clearance for ArrowEVOLUTION PICC with Chlorag+ard technology

Teleflex Incorporated today announced that it has received 510(k) market clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the company's ArrowEVOLUTION™ PICC with Chlorag+ard™ technology, a peripherally inserted central catheter with a Chlorhexedine-based solution that has been chemically-bonded into the surface of the catheter both intra- and extralumenally. A study published in the September 2010 issue of SHOCK by Dr. Ed W. Childs and colleagues at Scott & White Healthcare looks at how female versus male rats fared after suffering a trauma and subsequent hemorrhagic shock who were given Estradiol (estrogen). In the study, the Estradiol prevented vascular permeability following hemorrhagic shock.
