World Vision to construct transitional shelters for displaced Haitians

World Vision is supporting the first relocation of 7,500 displaced Haitians from camps in Port-au-Prince to a site on the outskirts of the city where transitional shelters will be built. In partnership with other agencies, World Vision will construct one-third of the 1,356 shelters planned for a 75 sq. kilometre plot of land recently allocated by the Government of Haiti for people most at risk from the upcoming rainy season.

FDA to have greater tobacco and cigarette control

Starting Tuesday, June 22 the Food and Drug Administration will have far greater control over how tobacco and cigarettes are marketed, distributed and sold. The announcement on Thursday, March 18 was made by Kathleen Sebelius, the US Health and Human Services Secretary.

Recent releases in Global Health

A Lancet study performed a systematic review of HIV prevention and treatment services targeting injecting drug users (IDUs) globally based on the availability of "core interventions for IDUs: needle and syringe programmes (NSPs), opioid substitution therapy (OST) and other drug treatment, HIV testing and counselling, antiretroviral therapy (ART), and condom programmes." The authors conclude, "although the number of countries with core HIV prevention services is growing … worldwide, there are few countries in which the level of intervention coverage is sufficient to prevent HIV transmission" (Mathers et al., 3/20).

Novo Nordisk awarded funds to support diabetes summer camps nationwide

Novo Nordisk Inc., a world leader in diabetes care, announced that it has awarded funds to support scholarships and capital improvements to diabetes summer camps at fifteen locations nationwide. In support of their dedication to meeting the needs of children with diabetes, the grants will help the camps provide financial assistance programs to campers and improve facilities for the campers' use.

U.N. Secretary-General visits Haiti to monitor international aid response

During his second visit to Haiti since the January earthquake, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "promised Haitians on Sunday that the world has not forgotten the quake-torn nation as it suffers from a shortage of shelter and growing violence in teeming camps for the homeless," the Associated Press reports (Katz, 3/14).

Criticism, passion emerge at health care summit

NPR interviewed Rep. Dave Camp, ranking Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee. Camp said: "We were able to at least be heard and have some exposure to the ideas that we've been promoting for a long time. And the president did finally say in the close that we do have ideas that lower costs in insurance and that — do it without increasing taxes. And we don't cut Medicare. And we don't have new mandates in our proposals. So this is really the first opportunity we've had to really focus not only our colleagues and the president, but also the American people on the proposals we've had" (Siegel, 2/25).

Healthcare industries pay millions to summit invitees, says CREW’s study

On the eve of President Obama’s health care reform summit, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) released data showing that since 2005, health care special interests have invested at least $28 million in the campaigns of House and Senate leaders, chairs and ranking members of committees with primary jurisdiction over health care legislation. Additionally, President Obama received over $18.6 million during his presidential campaign.
