The GluTracker™ assay kit from BioVision offers a non-radioactive method for imaging and accurately measuring glucose uptake through FACS.

Glucose is a pervasive source of energy in a majority of the organisms and has a vital role in homeostasis and cellular metabolism. Cancer cells are characterized by elevated levels of glucose uptake to support their high proliferation rate. BioVision has created a fluorescent glucose analog, which can be taken up by cells quite similar to glucose through glucose transporters. Yet, it is not possible to fully utilize this glucose analog in glycolysis due to its modification and subsequent accumulation inside the cells.

Fluorescence produced by this fluorescent glucose analog is comparable to the glucose uptake by the cells. Thus, it can be employed to measure glucose uptake with the help of flow cytometry and fluorescent microscopy. The kit includes phloretin, a natural phenol that prevents glucose uptake, for validation of the assay. This non-radioactive, easy-to-use kit enables imaging and accurate measurement of glucose uptake in cultured cells in response to growth factors, insulin, and so on.
