Nexcelom Bioscience has introduced an automated cell counting instrument called Cellometer Mini. The instrument offers precise and cost-effective automated cell counting using Trypan blue viability.
The Cellometer Mini uses pattern-recognition software and bright-field imaging to rapidly and precisely detect and count individual dead cells and live cells that are stained with Trypan blue. With the help of this instrument, the count, concentration, diameter, and % viability of the cells stained with Trypan blue are automatically computed and reported in less than 10 seconds. In certain computers, it takes just 3 seconds.

The Cellometer Mini automated cell counter has been developed such that it can be easily fitted in even the most compact laboratory space. Cellometer software can be loaded on a majority of computers* and connected to the Cellometer Mini cell counter through a unique USB cable.

Individual Cells in Clusters and Irregular-Shaped Cells can be Analyzed
By using the Cellometer pattern-recognition software, individual cells inside the cell clusters can be identified and counted to achieve the most precise cell count. The following image is an example of the cell-counted image of A549 cancer cells stained with Trypan blue.
The cell roundness setting of the Cellometer Mini can be altered to detect and count irregular-shaped cells, like activated T-cells, RD cells, and skin cancer cells such as the SK-MEL-2 cells illustrated below.
Cell Size Analysis and Size-Based Counting
The Cellometer Mini cell counter automatically creates a cell size histogram depending on the diameter of the cells. The settings of maximum and minimum cell diameters can be improved to count specific cells present in a sample, or to remove very large cells or debris.
Counted-Cell Images for Data Verification
Users can view the counted cells on-screen to verify whether cells present in the sample are being properly imaged and analyzed.
Users can confirm whether:
- Debris has been eliminated
- Cells have been counted accurately, depending on their shape and size
- Cells within clumps are being counted separately
Faster and More Precise than Manual Cell Counting
It takes about 5 minutes to count 1 x 106 cells with a manual hemacytometer. At times, it takes twice the time to count live cells and dead cells.
The Cellometer Mini cell counter reports both count and concentration for live cells and dead cells, and also reports % viability in less than 10 seconds, which is over 25 times faster when compared to manual counting.

Counting Chambers — No Washing or Contamination
The Cellometer Disposable Counting Chambers include two separate enclosed chambers with a height that can be controlled accurately. A 20mL cell suspension is placed inside the chamber using a regular single-channel pipette, and this chamber is then embedded into the Cellometer cell counter. After this, the cells are directly imaged from the chamber.
The disposable Cellometer cell counting chambers provide several key benefits:

Data and Cell Images can be Easily Printed and Saved
Users can directly print from the software screen. The normal printout shows dead, live, and total count and concentration of cells, cell images, and % viability. Users can automatically create a report for each cell count by choosing the “Auto-Print” setting.
Users can effortlessly and automatically save raw images, data, and/or counted images to a data stick, local computer, or network.
