Glycine (GLY) is one of the 20 regular amino acids typically found in proteins. GLY side chain is a hydrogen substituent, so it is the smallest among the proteogenic amino acids and the only amino acid that is not chiral.
Standard functions of GLY include participation in the synthesis of glutathione, creatine, heme groups, and conjugated bile acids (bile salts). It also exists as one of the most plentiful residues in the triple-helical structure of collagen. It serves as a glucogenic amino acid controlling sugar levels in the blood. Thus, GLY supplementation has been administered to patients suffering hypoglycemia, anemia, and chronic fatigue.
In cancer cells, GLY consumption is extremely correlated to cancer cell proliferation, via purine synthesis. Glycine uptake in cancer cell research assists the role of this amino acid in tumorigenesis and malignancy. GLY possesses inhibitory as well as excitatory neurotransmitter functions in the spinal cord and brain stem.
The Glycine Assay Kit from BioVision offers a simple, sensitive, and high-throughput adaptable assay that detects the physiological concentration of glycine in a range of biological fluids. The assay’s principle is based on the oxidation of glycine creating a fluorophore (Ex/Em = 535/587 nm) with a stable signal, which is directly proportional to the quantity of GLY in the sample. The assay is specific and other standard and non-standard amino acids do not inhibit the assay. The assay can detect as little as 1 µM of GLY in a range of samples.
