Image collection speed is further enhanced by sample transfer rates of less than 60 seconds. A simultaneous view of up to four detector signals allows for image comparison without alignment changes for all non-conductive, biological materials due to MERLIN’s unique charge compensation with in-situ cleaning.
Novice users are able to achieve professional results using the automated column alignment of MERLIN which quickly attains optimum imaging conditions.
In combination with the ATLAS software, high resolution, extreme field of view imaging is possible with MERLIN, with image sizes of up to 32k by 32k pixels, perfect for examining large sections from brain, kidney, nanopathology and forensic samples or other tissues.
MERLIN, in combination with the 3View ultramicrotome, can also be used for high-resolution, 3D-imaging of tissues and even whole organisms, such as Drosophila, zebrafish or plants.

Complete Detection System
The primary electron beam generates secondary electrons and backscatter electrons. Secondary electrons precipitate directly from the topmost nanometers of your sample with energy of less than 50 eV and show the topography of the surface.
The electric field of the GEMINI column attracts these electrons and the excitation lens directs them to the annular InLens Detector. Depending on the surface condition of your sample, MERLIN® detects the secondary electrons over a wide angular range.
Backscatter electrons are generated below the surface. Their energy level is similar to that of the primary electrons hitting the sample. Their number is greater than that of the secondary electrons and they provide highly specific information about the material characteristics of your sample.
They are attracted by the electric field of the GEMINI column and projected into the column. The difference in energy ensures that secondary electrons and backscatter electrons are displayed on different trajectories by the Beam Booster. The backscatter electrons are detected by the Energy Selective Backscatter Detector (EsB) and selected according to their energy level.
If the angle is too small, the backscatter electrons do not make their way into the column, but are detected by the AsBR-Detector at the pole of the lens. The small-angle backscatter electrons provide highly specific information about the crystalline structures of your sample. The angle-dependent detection of backscatter electrons is called Angle selective Backscatter Electron Detection or AsB-Detection.
The AsB-Detector of MERLIN® is completely integrated into the GEMINI lens and detects backscatter electrons with minimal working distance. The AsB-Detector no longer needs to be aligned to the optical axis.
