TEMPEST Liquid Handler from FORMULATRIX

The TEMPEST® Liquid Handler from FORMULATRIX is a non-contact, versatile dispenser. It allows users to dispense up to 12 different reagents at the same time by using 96 separately controlled outputs. Users can dispense any reagent, of any volume, into any well.

Wide range of applications

  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA)
  • High throughput screening (HTS)
  • Design of experiment (DoE) and assay development
  • Bead-based and cell culture assays
  • Polymerase chain-reaction (PCR) workflows—both digital and real-time
  • Next-generation sequencing (NGS)—library preparation
  • Screening and biochemical assay development

Benefits

Precise—non-contact microdiaphragm technology makes use of positive displacement, guaranteeing high precision and accuracy over an extensive range of reagent types, such as beads and cells.

Low dead volume—non-recoverable dead volume as low as 48 μL for every chip.

Flexible—the TEMPEST® assists all kinds of SBS plates, and can be effortlessly incorporated into other robotic automation. It has an optional barcode reader and plate stackers. FORMULATRIX also offers MANTIS® liquid handlers for lower throughput requirements.

Fast—users can dispense 200 nL to a 96-well plate in just 3 seconds, and 1 μL to a 384-well plate in only 5 seconds.

State-of-the-art dispensing technology

When speed matters

Every 8-nozzled microfluidic chip dispenses reagents quickly with minimal waste. A majority of the tasks are completed in less than 40 seconds.

Typical dispense rates

  • 1 μL to 384-well plate = 5 seconds
  • 5 μL to 96-well plate = 4 seconds
  • 10 μL to 384-well plate = 9 seconds
  • 20 μL to 384-well plate = 13 seconds
  • 200 nL to 96-well plate = 3 seconds
  • 200 nL to 384-well plate = 6 seconds
  • 200 nL to 1536-well plate = 11 seconds

Customizable to meet your needs

The TEMPEST® can be tailored to fit your budget and application. The system provides independent versus general controls, bar code scanner, plate stackers, and also any combination of up to 12 high (1 and 5 μL) or low volume (200 nL and 1 μL) microfluidic chips.

Easy-to-use software

The software offers a simplified, easy-to-use method to design and perform even the most difficult dispensing protocols. In addition, the control software provides an intuitive visual layout of both the hardware setup and the plate design, and offers tools to generate backfills and gradient designs. Microsoft Excel integration also enables users to physically edit well volumes for extra control.

Application for optimization

High-throughput screening (HTS)

Users can miniaturize their cDNA synthesis and library preparation reactions, even when there is a limited starting material.

Cell-based assays

Cell-based assays allow uniform and gentle distribution of cells for consistent cell density and increased cell viability.

Assay development and optimization

Users can streamline the evolution, right from assay design to drug discovery.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA)

Reagents can be dispensed to optimize assay performance, and cost can be reduced by decreasing the reaction volumes and dead volume without affecting the quality of experimental outcomes.
