El solamente 1−2% del genoma humano codifica genes de la codificación de la proteína. El descanso del genoma consiste en el ARN de la no-codificación, regiones sin traducir, sitios del empalme y elementos transposable. La mayor parte de las funciones de estos elementos son desconocidas.
