Lumenera’s INFINITY Cameras Selected by University of Ottawa Biology Department as Imaging Solution

The microscopy stations of the University of Ottawa undergraduate students were newly equipped with Lumenera’s INFINITY2-3 and INFINITY3-1color digital cameras.

The imaging solution for the Olympus CX31 and Olympus SZ61 stereo microscopes used in the biology department needed updating. The university required new, high-quality microscopy cameras based on a USB 2.0 interface that offered increased performance and included image analysis software that was intuitive and easy for students to use.

Olympus Canada obtained the tender to place 365 Lumenera INFINITY microscopy cameras into the teaching labs of the Biology department at the University of Ottawa, which is one of Canada's leading research intensive universities.

INFINITY Cameras in Biology Lab

The biology department of the University of Ottawa moved to its new undergraduate teaching facility in 2004, which includes a total of 10 labs.

Each lab has a workstation, which is a unique combination of a conventional wet bench and microscopy station, paired with a modern computer and monitor.

Students work together in pairs with a compound and dissection microscope, which are presently equipped with Lumenera's INFINITY2-3 connected to the workstation's computer.

The 355 INFINITY2-3, 3 megapixel microscopy cameras and 10 INFINTY3-1, 1.4 megapixel cooled cameras replace cameras that were based on a FireWire interface for greater ease of use and the eliminated need for a FireWire card.

Figures 1, 2 and 3 show the usage of Lumenera microscopes in the Biology Lab in Ottawa University.

The students who have used the new cameras are happy with the improvements. The Lumenera team worked in close tandem with the University to offer comprehensive support with hardware, delivery and software configurations.

Using digital imaging has helped increase productivity as well as the time spent in the lab. The labor-intensive process of drawing the specimens has been eliminated by being able to record observations and view the high resolution images on the computer monitors.

This has encouraged a collaborative learning environment with discussions between lab partners occurring as they study the specimen at the same time, rather than taking turns looking down the microscope.

The interaction between faculty and students has also become more interactive as the lab instructors can discuss and answer questions about what the students see on the screen. Students also appreciate that the images taken with the cameras make it easier to later study at home and continue to work on materials once the lab is over.

  • 5 fps at full 1392 x 1040 resolution
