Avanti JXN and Optima XPN Series Centrifuges for Multi-User Laboratories

Common equipment rooms or facilities shared by several different laboratories often result in a lab where users have different levels of experience in using high-performance centrifuges and floor-standing ultracentrifuges.

This poses a number of challenges to facility and laboratory managers who need to ensure safe and secure operation, maximize uptime and reduce the maintenance expenses associated with these centrifuges.

Beckman Coulter Life Sciences offers Avanti JXN Series high-performance centrifuges (Figure 1) and Optima XPN ultracentrifuges that are integrated with unique features that make these goals easier to achieve.

As a result, labs can focus on the preparation of quality samples and research results, instead of carrying out comprehensive training procedures and having to focus on additional concerns about safety when using the centrifuges.

Easy to Use

The centrifuges have a large LCD touch screen that is easy to read, learn and navigate, even from across the laboratory. Training and usage is made easier, by a Windows®-based user interface, which also reduces set-up time and the possibility of errors.

Instead of users focusing on learning the instruments, they can focus on acquiring results as they can simply interact with an intuitive graphical interface that is available in many different languages.

Users can get answers instantly, owing to an on-screen, context-sensitive ‘help’ feature, thereby saving effort and time.

Both the Avanti JXN and Optima XPN Series have up to 1,000 user-defined programs consisting of 30 steps each, so that almost any protocol can be configured and stored for later use.

Program names of up to 64 characters made up of any combination of letters, number or symbols can be input by users to create meaningful names that can be easily recalled.

This offers users the freedom to use dates, Internet codes and other characters for the program name. User-defined programs allotted to particular operators can also be easily created, which restricts the number of users who have access to the protocol.

Setting up and using user-defined protocols helps ensure run-to-run consistency and reduced user error.

Protected Access

Password protection is available for up to 50 different user profiles, which enables multi-user lab environments to control access. Allowing users the appropriate security levels – Administrator, Operator or Super User - is simple.

This enables laboratory managers to control the level of access to the centrifuge that individual users have, according to the permissions below (Table 1). Remote access enables lab managers to carry out user management without having to leave the office.

Overall safety is improved by restricting centrifuge access only to those who have been appropriately trained on the centrifuge. This also maximizes centrifuge uptime and reduces repair costs associated with user error.

Using password protection to restrict access to the centrifuge enables the lab manager to ensure centrifuge training has been completed before people use the instrument. A user profile and a personal identification number (PIN) can be issued as soon as training has been completed successfully.

A PIN expiration date can also be established by the administrator to ensure that a user updates their training at regularly scheduled intervals.

Detailed Run History and Rotor Tracking by Serial Number

Paper logbooks need manual entries, but a powerful tracking capability eliminates the need for this and also ensures that the details of each individual run are documented and connected to a particular user.

This introduces a level of accountability into the lab environment. An archive of each individual run is built by detailed run tracking and includes the user operating the centrifuge, run parameters, time/date, and any diagnostics or errors that were issued during the course of the run.

The number of cycles users have accumulated on specific rotors used with the The Avanti JXN and Optima XPN Series centrifuges, can also be tracked. Rotors can be chosen by serial number from an on-screen rotor library.

The number of cycles is monitored by the centrifuge, meaning the rotor life can be accurately tracked and the rotor retired before it becomes unsafe and able to cause damage to the centrifuge.

This comprehensive tracking data is also valuable information for Beckman Coulter engineers who inspect rotors as part of the Field Rotor Inspection Program (FRIP). This data not only helps maintain lab safety, but also ensures that labs get the most out of their valuable investment.


In multi-user lab environments, users may find they need to walk to another floor or even another building to access centrifuges in a common equipment room.

Since the Avanti JXN and Optima XPN Series centrifuges can be monitored and controlled remotely, users can access the centrifuges from almost anywhere through a mobile device or PC using the custom MobileFuge application available for Android™ and iOS devices (Figure 2).

Whenever a problem occurs with a centrifuge, lab managers can be notified using the email diagnostic alerts feature. Managers can be made aware of any problems, irrespective of their location. Table 2 shows the features of the Optima XPN and Avanti JXN Series centrifuges.
