Medical Flow Sensors, Flow Meters & Medical Flow Measurement

CRISI was assisted by Titan Enterprises during the early days of development of the unique disposable, medical flow sensors employed in a medication management system called BD Intelliport™ for manual intravenous (IV) bolus injections. CRISI first tested an Atrato ultrasonic flow meter and then implemented the basic design. With assistance from Titan, the company miniaturized the flow meter assembly and made it into a disposable unit appropriate for medical flow sensors. BD has received exclusive global rights to use Titan’s Atrato technology in IV bolus injections.

In June 2013, CRISI and BD entered into an exclusive partnership to mutually develop the BD Intelliport™ Medication Management System – a first-of-its-kind medication management system developed for manual IV bolus injections. The Intelliport is the first and only medication management system to provide real-time dose measurement, drug identification, and allergy detection at the point of injection while wirelessly transmitting the captured data directly into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) after the medication is administrated. In December 2014, the Intelliport system received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is anticipated to be commercially available in spring 2015.

The Atrato ultrasonic flow meter from Titan Enterprises is a true inline non-invasive flow meter without the disadvantages and contorted flow path associated with alternative designs. The flow meter can handle flows from laminar to turbulent and is hence largely unaffected by viscosity. The Atrato ultrasonic flow meter also provides excellent linearity, turndown, and repeatability. It is available in 110 °C and 60 °C temperature versions and a 30 bar higher pressure model, and uses patented ‘time-of-flight’ ultrasonic technology that allows it to operate across very wide flow ranges (200:1) with excellent accuracy (better than ±1.0% of reading).
